TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 2026 BRICS Summit adopted the New Delhi Declaration as a common direction for translating joint commitments into concrete steps and results. The declaration was produced during the summit held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India, on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
BRICS operates as a major bloc of developing countries serving as a forum for economic, political, and security cooperation. Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the full member list has expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the restricted BRICS 2026 Summit session as meaningful and constructive. PM Modi stated that global shifts require the reform of international institutions, particularly regarding representation, responsiveness, and rules of engagement.
"We have to work through partnership and collective action to bridge the gap between commitments and results. The 'New Delhi Declaration' adopted today provides a clear direction for our collective resolve. It is now our responsibility to translate these commitments into tangible results," PM Modi said in New Delhi, India, on Saturday.
During the event, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the importance of leveraging BRICS' collective strength to ensure joint commitments deliver real benefits to the public.
Prabowo stressed that this combined strength must not remain confined to paper. "But translated into opportunities for our society. A strength that enables the Global South to have a greater voice in shaping its own future," he said.
The Head of State added that BRICS' collective power should also serve to build a more just and equal international order. "Together, we can make our strength count," said the former Defense Minister under President Joko Widodo's administration.
This year's BRICS Summit carried the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability," reflecting member nations' commitment to building resilience, promoting innovation, expanding cooperation, and pursuing sustainable development.
The high-level meeting was attended by President Xi Jinping of China, President Vladimir Putin of Russia, President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia, and Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Hung of Vietnam.
Additionally, the summit brought together President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines, President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira of Brazil, Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow of Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov of Uzbekistan, and Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo of Uganda.
