Peru Rejoices in the Inauguration of Pope Leo XIV

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The election of Pope Leo XIV has brought profound joy and emotions throughout Peru, a country that has been part of the new Pope's life and ministry.

Archbishop Paolo Rocco Gualtieri, the Apostolic Nuncio for Peru since 2022, recalls his memories of Pope Leo XIV. Gualtieri believes in the strong connection of Pope Leo XIV with Peru and his missionary experience there, which will enrich his papacy.

“Peru is rejoicing at the election of Pope Leo XIV,” Archbishop Gualtieri told Radio Vatican, as quoted by Vatican News.

Gualtieri mentioned that Pope Leo XIV spent most of his life in Peru and gained profound experience as a missionary, a pastor, an educator, and a bishop. Gualtieri referred to Pope Leo XIV as a young priest and missionary in Peru.

"He arrived as a young priest and missionary, taught canon law at the Major Seminary, served two terms as provincial superior, and later became Apostolic Administrator and Bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo. He truly gave his heart to Peru,” he said.

Gualtieri added that the memories of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost's service during critical times still resonate. He specifically noted his leadership and compassion during the 2020 pandemic and the impact of the extreme conditions caused by the 2023 El Niño. Gualtieri emphasized that Prevost's presence and commitment during these crises strengthened his bond with the people of Peru.

For Gualtieri, the deep connection between the Pope and Peru is not just a personal legacy, but also a source of encouragement for a nation grappling with political and social challenges.

“The people feel very close to him,” he said. “I remember his first visit back to Peru as a Cardinal. I had the honour of accompanying him to Chiclayo, and the welcome was overwhelming. It was clear that he had been a pastor who walked with his people.”

During their journey together, Gualtieri said he saw signs of hope. “His election is also a message of encouragement to the Peruvian people at a difficult time. It reminds them that they are not forgotten and that their experience and faith have helped shape the new Pope,” he said.

Reflecting on the Pope's character, Gualtieri described him as “a simple man, yet determined, a great pastor.” He believes that this pastoral heart will be the center of his papal ministry.

“I believe his time in Peru was a beautiful and formative experience,” he said. “It shaped him as a missionary, a teacher, and a bishop. That will be a richness for his pontificate.”

As the Church looks ahead under Pope Leo XIV's leadership, the bishop expressed confidence in his vision.

“His papacy will be marked by a commitment to unity, a synodal, collegial Church that walks together as the people of God. As he himself has said, the Church is called to bring light into the night of the world.” Gualtieri concluded.
