TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Director of state-owned electricity company PLN, Darmawan Prasodjo, announced that a power supply of 5,579 Megawatts (MW) has been successfully restored to 1,770 affected customer distribution networks. This full-scale restoration follows the sweeping blackout that struck Sumatra on Friday, May 22, 2026.
"PLN is continuing the process of fully restoring electricity to all remaining customers," Darmawan said in a written statement released on Monday, May 25, 2026.
The stabilization of the electricity supply was confirmed after Darmawan personally inspected the network repair progress at the Sumatra Main Distribution Unit and Load Control Center (UIP3BS) in Pekanbaru, Riau, last Sunday. PLN remains on high alert, closely monitoring the electricity supply to vital public service facilities such as hospitals, airports, and community service centers.
Darmawan stated that all electrical parameters across the Sumatra grid are currently in a stable and optimal operating condition, ensuring a continuous supply of electricity to the public. PLN continues to track the electrical grid in real-time through the UIP3BS, which functions as the operational center for power distribution across the Sumatra region.
"With real-time monitoring, any developments on the ground can be addressed immediately, ensuring that the system remains safe, stable, and optimal in meeting the public's electricity needs," he said.
The widespread blackout initially struck Sumatra at 18:44 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) due to severe weather conditions, which triggered disruptions across major substations and transmission systems, particularly affecting the southern, central, and northern regions of the island.
Initial findings indicated that the failure originated along the 275 kV transmission line connecting Muara Bungo and Sungai Rumbai in Jambi. Among the provinces hit hardest by the resulting outage were Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi.
Speaking on behalf of PLN, Darmawan apologized to the public for the widespread inconvenience caused by the blackout. "Once again, we are putting forward our best efforts, mobilizing every resource at our disposal, and remaining on standby to ensure the electrical system is completely restored as quickly as possible," Darmawan stated during a press conference on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
