TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated on Sunday, May 18, 2025, marking the beginning of his papacy. During the inauguration ceremony in the Vatican, he delivered a message of love and unity.
Pope Leo XIV, whose birth name is Robert Francis Prevost, is the first pope from Chicago, United States. He was elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church on May 8, 2025, after a two-day conclave. He held his first mass at the Sistine Chapel on May 9, 2025.
The inauguration was attended by world leaders, including Vice President JD Vance, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The Pope shook hands with Zelensky, Vance, and other dignitaries.
In his sermon, the Pope called for "love and unity" within the church and a world where peace prevails. "In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest," he said as quoted by Newsweek.
He spoke about global conflicts in Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine. Pope Leo XIV said that those suffering from wars should not be forgotten. "The martyred Ukraine is waiting for negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen," he said.
He also spoke about the need for the coexistence of diversity. "This is the missionary spirit that must animate us, not closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the world," he expressed.
Cardinal Luigi Tagle presented him with the Fisherman's Ring, which depicts Saint Peter holding the keys to Heaven, marking the beginning of his papacy. He also received the liturgical vestment known as the pallium, a strip of woolen cloth symbolizing his role as a shepherd.
Before speaking, Leo greeted the spectators from his papal car. After the mass, Leo is expected to meet with world leaders in a series of meetings at the Vatican.
