Prabowo and Dutch PM Discuss Trade, Hormuz Security in Phone Call

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto held a phone conversation with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten on Thursday, June 11, discussing ways to strengthen bilateral relations, expand trade cooperation, and address regional and global challenges.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, the two leaders exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands, including efforts to advance the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA).

They also discussed a range of international issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East.

"The discussion covered bilateral cooperation, trade relations, and various regional and global issues, including the situation in the Middle East," the embassy said in a statement posted on its Instagram account on Friday, June 12.

The embassy said the conversation reaffirmed both countries' commitment to strengthening a mutually beneficial partnership amid an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

Trade and Security Cooperation

In a statement posted on X, Jetten highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Indonesia and the Netherlands, describing the two countries as close partners in areas including trade, water management, and sustainable agriculture.

"Together with President Prabowo Subianto, I discussed today the importance of international cooperation for security and prosperity in our region and beyond, also addressing the trade agreement between the EU and Indonesia and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz," Jetten wrote.

Jetten described Indonesia and the Netherlands as like-minded partners and said both countries would continue working together to deepen bilateral relations amid growing global uncertainty.

The phone call follows the launch of the Indonesia-Netherlands Comprehensive Partnership Action Plan 2026–2029 in October 2025.

The framework, unveiled by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel, serves as a roadmap for expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

During the same visit, the two countries signed the second phase of the National Initiative for Sustainable & Climate Smart Oil Palm Smallholders (NISCOPS), a program that also involves the United Kingdom. The initiative aims to support sustainable palm oil production while improving the productivity of smallholder farmers in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

At the launch of the partnership plan, Sugiono described the Netherlands as a trusted partner for Indonesia.

"Indonesia sees the Netherlands as a reliable partner. Together, we can build on our long shared history to create a strong partnership for future generations," he said.
