Prabowo Cancels Attendance at Russia-ASEAN Summit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta President Prabowo Subianto has canceled his attendance at the Russia-ASEAN Summit held in Kazan, Russia. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the President has his own reasons behind this decision.

"First and foremost, he has his own considerations because there are still many things he wants to focus on resolving domestically," Prasetyo said in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Another reason, according to Prasetyo, is that Prabowo has already met with the top leaders of Southeast Asian countries when attending the ASEAN Summit held in Cebu, the Philippines, on May 7-8, 2026.

Additionally, Prabowo had bilateral meetings with President Vladimir Putin during his state visit to Moscow, Russia, last April.

In those meetings, Prasetyo explained, Prabowo discussed a wide range of issues. "And of the several commitments to cooperation, some have already been followed up on technically," he said.

The conference, held to commemorate 35 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and ASEAN, takes place in Kazan on June 17-19.

On Tuesday, June 9, Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno spoke about the possibility of President Prabowo Subianto attending the event. After accompanying Prabowo in receiving letters of credence from several ambassadors of friendly nations at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Havas stated that they were still awaiting the final agenda from the Presidential Secretariat.
