TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto extended his congratulations to Anthony Albanese upon his reelection as the Prime Minister (PM) of Australia. Prabowo conveyed his congratulations directly through a telephone conversation on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2025.
"Through a telephone conversation on Sunday afternoon, President Prabowo Subianto personally conveyed his congratulations to the Honorable Anthony Albanese on his success and reelection as the Prime Minister of Australia," as stated in the official social media account of the Cabinet Secretariat, quoted by Tempo on Monday, May 5, 2025.
President Prabowo also expressed his hope for the further strengthening of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Australia under Prime Minister Albanese's leadership.
"President Prabowo hopes to continue and strengthen Indonesia's partnership with Australia under Prime Minister Albanese's leadership," the statement continued.
Anthony Albanese made history by extending his term after achieving a significant lead in the election on Saturday, May 3, 2025. This victory makes him the first Prime Minister from the Labor Party to hold office for two consecutive terms in the last two decades.
The Labor Party defeated the conservative coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party. This victory marks a rare occurrence of consecutive terms in office for the party.
Albanese's victory forced opposition leader Peter Dutton to acknowledge defeat in the election on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
"We didn't do well enough during this campaign. It's very clear tonight, and I take full responsibility for that," Dutton was quoted by CBS News.
The Australian Electoral Commission announced that the center-left Labor Party in power secured 70 seats, and the conservative opposition coalition secured 24 seats in the House of Representatives, which consists of 150 members. Unaligned small parties and independent candidates won 13 seats.
Anthony Albanese was born in 1963 to a single mother of Irish descent. He was raised in public housing in Camperdown, a suburb in western Sydney. Albanese attended St. Joseph's Primary School and St Mary's Cathedral College.
His political journey began in the early 1980s, inspired by his mother's involvement in the Labor Party. Albanese started as a research officer for Tom Uren, a politician who became his main mentor.
He won his first election at the age of 33 in 1996. He continued to hold his seat, culminating in his appointment as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia in May 2022. He is the first leader of the Labor Party to form a government since 2013.
