TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto praised Indonesia’s bullion bank for successfully managing 153 tons of gold, valued at an estimated US$20 billion, since its launch in 2025.
Speaking at a press conference following a Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the State Palace on Monday, the President highlighted the gold bank as a crowning achievement of his 20-month administration.
The establishment of the bullion bank, which is jointly operated by state-owned pawnshop PT Pegadaian and Islamic lender Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), marks a structural shift in how Indonesia leverages its massive mineral wealth.
"For the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesia has a gold bank, a bullion bank, which now manages 153 tons of gold," President Prabowo remarked.
"This is an economic strength that is recognized by the world, and I believe it will continue to grow in the coming years," the Head of State added.
He emphasized that Indonesia has quietly achieved global success, noting that very few gold banking services worldwide have managed such a large volume of gold within their first year of operation.
Launched in February 2025, the national bullion bank has seen an unprecedented influx of retail and institutional users.
According to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, as of March 2026, the Bullion Financial Services Institution under PT Pegadaian recorded a sharp increase in customers, rising from 3.2 million in February 2025 to 5.6 million in February 2026.
During the same 12-month period, public gold savings at Pegadaian also grew significantly from 10.5 tons to 19.25 tons.
Meanwhile, BSI's total gold management—encompassing gold installments, pawning, and savings—rose to 22.5 tons in February 2026, up from 16.85 tons prior to the launch of its Bullion Business Activity in January 2025.
Furthermore, BSI's gold savings customer base experienced a sharp increase, climbing from 531,329 depositors in December 2025 to 766,742 by February 2026.
