Pride Month Post by SUMA UI Spotlights Discrimination, Persecution

3 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Relations of the University of Indonesia (UI), Erwin Agustian Panigoro, stated that the social media post by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Suara Mahasiswa (Suma) concerning Pride Month, sexual orientation, and gender identity does not reflect the stance of the university.

Erwin emphasized that the content of the post purely represents the editorial viewpoint of the respective student organization. He stated, "The content does not reflect the official position of the University of Indonesia or the entire academic community of UI," on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

According to Erwin, UI respects freedom of speech as part of democratic academic life. "This freedom provides space for students to express ideas and opinions critically and responsibly," he said.

As a higher education institution, Erwin continued, UI adheres to the values of Pancasila, legislative regulations, and prevailing norms in Indonesia.

"UI upholds integrity, respect for human dignity, and consistently seeks to create a safe, orderly, and conducive academic environment," Erwin stated. "These values are the absolute foundation for UI in carrying out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education."

In this spirit, Erwin stated, UI views the campus as a space for dialogue and the development of open-minded knowledge. However, every opinion needs to be conveyed with politeness, non-provocative manner, and in accordance with academic ethics.

"Freedom of expression must always be accompanied by social responsibility to ensure that differences in opinion do not trigger polarization or division in society," Erwin emphasized.

Erwin revealed that UI's leadership is currently following up on the dynamics and concerns arising in the community regarding the post, and is even conducting further internal review and evaluation.

"This process is being carried out in conjunction with campus authorities to ensure that every student activity is always in line with the UI Student Code of Ethics and Regulations, and takes guidance from the corridor of responsible academic freedom," Erwin stated.

Therefore, Erwin added, UI invites all academic members and the wider community to respect and uphold unity. "UI believes that a healthy campus climate is built through constructive expression of aspirations and respect for the noble values that form the basis of communal, national, and state life," Erwin concluded.

It should be noted that the Pride Month post by SUMA UI highlights the discrimination and persecution faced by some LGBTQ+ communities in Indonesia, including on campus.

According to SUMA UI, the anti-violence stance and respect for human dignity align with the values of Pancasila, especially the second principle, which is Just and Civilized Humanity.
