TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced the latest U.S. military strike on Iran.
“The absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification. For our part, we are making efforts to assist the Iranian people," Putin said on Monday, June 23, 2025, as quoted by The Hill.
Putin delivered the remarks while meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow, according to Al Arabiya. He noted that Russia's stance on the unfolding developments is already well established.
Russia’s Position
He stated that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already expressed this position, which is also reflected in Russia's actions at the United Nations Security Council.
"You are visiting Russia during a challenging period, marked by a significant escalation of tensions both in the region and surrounding your country," Putin told Araghchi, based on an English transcript from the Kremlin.
According to The Straits Times, Putin warned that U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities are increasing global risks. Araghchi was expected to deliver a letter from Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to Putin, seeking support from Moscow. However, no further details were provided.
Assistance to Iran
Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the type of support Russia could provide would depend on Iran’s specific requests.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had conducted airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—on Saturday night.
The operation reportedly involved American B-2 bombers. On the same day, Israel claimed responsibility for killing three senior Iranian Quds Force commanders and targeting multiple military installations in Iran. Two Iranian drones also reportedly breached Israeli air defenses.
In retaliation, Iran launched a strike on U.S. forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday, June 23, 2025. The response came after Tehran vowed to retaliate for the American attacks on its nuclear sites.
