Stars Lining Up After the Revision

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Arief Sulistyanto immediately envisioned a future bottleneck of senior officers when he learned of the passage of the revised National Police Law on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The prediction from the retired three-star police general stemmed from a provision that extends the service period of officers from age 58 to 60.

Arief, who served as Head of the National Police Education and Training Institute from 2019 to 2021, played a role in developing personnel competencies and career road maps within the police force. He said the extension of officers' service periods could affect the motivation and career development of other officers. "The regeneration process will also be affected," he told Tempo on Friday, June 12.

The revised Police Law also establishes a special retirement age for generals. Four-star police generals will retire at age 60, but their tenure can be extended by one year if the president deems it necessary. In practice, the provision applies only to the National Police chief, because Tribrata-1the code name for the police chiefis the only active-duty police officer holding a four-star rank.

According to Arief, the police operate under a pyramid-shaped organizational structure. The higher and more strategic the position, the fewer posts are available. He believes this reality would become the main cause of a future buildup of officers.
