TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taylor Swift is no stranger to breaking records, one after another. On Thursday night, the “Love Story” singer reached another rare milestone by being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, becoming the youngest woman ever honored.
Taking place in New York just before midnight, Swift stepped onto the SHOF stage and delivered an emotional, tearful speech.
Citing The Hollywood Reporter, Swift reflected on her long career journey, saying, “If I look back at my entire 23-year career in music, the ups and downs, the industry battles, the trials and tribulations, the tears and the cheers, and the dog piling of doubt, the criticisms of fair and unfair, the complete loss of privacy, the world tours and the ego wars and the twists of fate, the absolute magical chaos of this path that I chose when I was too young to remember it ever being a choice at all: songwriting was the easiest thing I ever did.”
Swift also noted that songwriting was “instinctual” and that she was never formally taught. As she continued speaking, the 36-year-old singer-songwriter appeared to hold back tears while expressing gratitude to her family.
“It was easy to choose songwriting over everything else in my life, but it couldn’t have been easy for my parents and my brother. To pick up and move our entire family from Pennsylvania to relocate to Nashville, so that I could hone my craft in the songwriting capital of the world… they uprooted their entire lives to move me to Music City. Even though words are kind of supposed to be my thing, I’ll never be able to express my gratitude to you guys for doing that for me. You’re the reason I’m here tonight.”
Her induction was attended by fiancé Travis Kelce, future mother-in-law Donna Kelce, as well as her parents, as noted by Billboard.
With this honor, Taylor Swift becomes the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the second youngest person overall. She was inducted by Steven Spielberg, who also praised her in his speech, saying that “Taylor Swift continues to fulfill her destiny as the most successful female artist not just of her time, but of all time.”
Rounding out Swift’s induction ceremony were performances of her songs “Cardigan” and “Dear John” by rising artist Sombr, who has previously been praised as one of the most promising young songwriters of his generation. He said, “It’s an honor to be here, thank you Taylor for trusting me.”
Alongside Taylor Swift, other honorees included KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Alanis Morissette, Kenny Loggins, and more, marking a memorable night full of historic moments.
