The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Satellite Images Reveal Failure of U.S. Strike on Iran's Nuclear Facilities
The U.S. government claimed that its Midnight Godam Operation on Sunday, June 22, 2025, successfully destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities located in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
However, analysis of commercial satellite imagery suggests otherwise. Nuclear experts reported no significant damage to the targeted facilities, based on images provided by Maxar Technologies.
"At the end of the day there are some really important things that haven't been hit," said Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey who tracks Iran's nuclear infrastructure. "If this ends here, it's a really incomplete strike," he told NPR on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
2. Indonesia Monitors Citizens in Gulf as Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates
Indonesia is keeping close watch on its citizens in the Gulf, where many Indonesians live and work, amid fears that the Iran-Israel conflict might spill over to other nations hosting U.S. military bases.
Andy Rachmianto, Director General of Protocol and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Jakarta already anticipated the possibility of the conflict widening after Iran responded to U.S. strikes on three of its nuclear sites.
“Certainly, due to the ongoing escalation of the conflict, which is still very dynamic, we have predicted that as a response from Iran to the strike on its three nuclear facilities, Iran openly stated that the attack has consequences,” Andy told reporters at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday evening, 24 June 2025.
3. The Storm Caused by the Iran-Israel War
The Iran-Israel war has now entered its second week, showing that there is potential for long term escalation of this conflict. The Indonesian government should immediately anticipate the negative impacts of this conflict on the national economy.
Israel continues to attack Iranian strategic facilities, particularly its nuclear infrastructure, which the United States and Israel say is concealing weapons of mass destruction. Conversely, Iran, through its leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has refused to surrender and will deploy all its military forces. These hardheaded attitudes mean that the future of the Middle East is increasingly uncertain.
The direct economic impact of this war began to be felt through an increase in the price of crude oil. When Israel attacked Tehran on June 13, 2025, the Brent crude oil price rose by 13 percent to US$78.5 per barrel—the highest since the start of the year. According to projections by JP Morgan, if Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz—through which one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies pass—the price could soar to US$130 per barrel.
