TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is planning to print a $250 bill featuring image of President Donald Trump to mark the 250th anniversary of the country's founding, CNN reported on Thursday, May 28.
A spokesperson for the US Treasury Department confirmed the plan to CNN, saying they are conducting "appropriate planning and due diligence" to respond to "active legislation."
Joe Wilson, a Republican member of the US House of Representatives representing South Carolina, has introduced legislation that would "symbolically recognize the President of the United States during the Semiquincentennial anniversary," CNN reported, citing a press release from Wilson's office.
Citing four current and former BEP employees, The Washington Post also reported on Thursday that Trump administration officials have urged the agency responsible for printing US currency to design a $250 bill featuring Trump's portrait.
If implemented, it would be the first time in more than 150 years that a living person's portrait has been printed on US currency.
Since last year, two political appointees at the Treasury Department, US Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior adviser, Mike Brown, have repeatedly urged staff at the Treasury Department to prepare a prototype for the bill, The Washington Post reported.
No living person's portrait has been printed on US currency since 1866, when the practice was banned after the image of a mid-level Treasury bureaucrat was printed on the 5-cent bill.
Legislation that would allow Trump's portrait to appear on the $250 bill was introduced in Congress last year to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, but the proposal has not yet been acted upon, The Washington Post reported.
