TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump said he would call his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and the leader of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to end the war in Ukraine. “HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A PRODUCTIVE DAY, A CEASEFIRE WILL TAKE PLACE, AND THIS VERY VIOLENT WAR, A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, WILL END,” Trump wrote on his social networking site, Truth Social, on Saturday, cited from Al Jazeera.
Trump's statement came a day after the first Moscow-Kyiv negotiations in three years failed to produce a ceasefire agreement. Putin rejected Zelensky's invitation to attend the discussion on Friday and sent a low-level delegation instead. Zelensky said that Putin was not serious about making peace with Ukraine.
Following the negotiations, which resulted in an agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners each, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said the next step would be a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
Russian Government Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said preparations for a telephone conversation between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump on May 19 were underway. Peskov told the TASS news agency that the conversation is being prepared on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
He confirmed Trump's earlier announcement on Truth Social that talk with Putin and Zelensky on May 19. According to Trump, the planned conversation would address the Russia-Ukraine War and the trade issue.
In addition to Putin, Trump also emphasized that after calling Putin and Zelensky, he would speak with the leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries.
Previously, Putin and Trump had contact on March 18. The schedule for Trump's conversation with Putin was announced shortly after high-level peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul concluded with several agreements.
On Saturday, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle attack in the Sumy region of Ukraine killed nine bus passengers. Seven others were injured in the attack in Bilopillia, Sumy, Zelensky said in a post on X. He called for stricter sanctions against Moscow.
“All the deceased were civilians,” said Zelensky. “And the Russians could not have failed to understand what kind of vehicle they were targeting. This was a deliberate killing of civilians.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack as a deliberate and heinous war crime. He accused Putin of continuing the war against civilians and called for additional pressure on Russia.
