US Embassy in Libya Refutes Reports on Palestinian Relocation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Embassy in Libya has denied reports that the U.S. government is preparing a plan to forcibly relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya. Previously, President Donald Trump was reported to be attempting to move Palestinian residents to Libya.

“The report of alleged plans to relocate Gazans to Libya is untrue,” said the U.S. embassy on platform X as cited in Arab News.

The internationally recognized Government of National Accord based in Tripoli has not commented.

Trump had earlier stated that he wanted the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and move Palestinians elsewhere.

Palestinians strongly reject any plan that requires them to leave Gaza, likening the idea to the "Nakba" or "catastrophe" of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes in the war that led to the establishment of Israel.

When Trump first mentioned his idea after assuming the presidency, he said he wanted U.S. allies Egypt and Jordan to accept people from Gaza.

Both countries rejected the idea, drawing global condemnation from Palestinians, Arab countries, and the United Nations, which stated that it would be ethnic cleansing.

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, NBC News reported that the Trump administration is preparing a plan to permanently relocate as many as one million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya.

NBC News cited five people familiar with the matter, including two with direct knowledge and a former U.S. official.

Last April, Trump mentioned that Palestinians could be moved “around to different countries, and you have plenty of countries that will do that.”

During a visit to Qatar this week, Trump reiterated his desire to take over the area. Trump said he wants to see it become a "free zone" that no longer needs rescue.

Previously, Trump stated that he wanted to transform Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East."
