TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will impose temporary flight restrictions over New York and New Jersey during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
NORAD said the restrictions will be in effect from Friday to Sunday through a series of Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) implemented in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
"NORAD will enforce multiple Federal Aviation Administration Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) areas over the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas beginning this Friday through Sunday," NORAD said in a statement via platform X on Friday, as quoted from Antara, citing Sputnik.
Previously, Argentine media outlet Olé reported that the final could be rescheduled due to smoke from Canadian wildfires that has reached New York.
However, the media outlet stated that the likelihood of a postponement remains remote, even though air quality reached hazardous levels.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11, and will close on July 19 with a closing ceremony and the final match between Argentina and Spain.
The final match on Sunday will kick off at 7:00 p.m. GMT in New York.
Argentina has won the World Cup three times: in 1978, 1986, and 2022.
If they win again, Argentina will become the third country to successfully defend their World Cup title, after Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962).
Meanwhile, Spain will be appearing in the World Cup final for the second time, having won the 2010 World Cup.
