World Cup Prediction: Will South Korea Silence Mexico's Home Crowd?

1 hour ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Mexico and South Korea will face off in a crucial Group A clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, June 19, at Guadalajara Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Both teams opened their campaigns with victories and enter the match level on three points. Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in their tournament opener, while South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1.

A victory would significantly boost either side's chances of advancing to the knockout stage and strengthen their position at the top of the group ahead of the final round of matches.

Mexico heads into the contest with confidence after an impressive performance in front of home supporters. Managed by Javier Aguirre, El Tri looked solid against South Africa and will once again rely on strong local backing in Guadalajara to maintain their momentum.

However, Mexico faces a setback in defense, with center-back Cesar Montes suspended for the match. Aguirre will need to reshuffle his backline while remaining wary of South Korea's pace on the counterattack.

The Mexican coach has identified South Korea's quick transitions as a major threat, particularly if his team loses possession in dangerous areas.

South Korea, meanwhile, arrives in high spirits after overturning a deficit to defeat the Czech Republic in its opening match. Under head coach Hong Myung-bo, the Taeguk Warriors demonstrated resilience and character, with captain Son Heung-min continuing to serve as the team's key figure.

The match against Mexico will provide a major test of South Korea's consistency, especially in a hostile atmosphere created by the home crowd. Securing another positive result would put the Asian side in a strong position before its final group-stage match against South Africa.

Head-to-Head

Mexico and South Korea have met 15 times in international competition. According to Sportskeeda, Mexico holds the advantage with eight victories, while South Korea has won five times and two matches have ended in draws.

Their most recent meeting came in an international friendly in October 2025, before the two nations learned they would share a group at the 2026 World Cup. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Raul Jimenez gave Mexico the lead in the 22nd minute with a header, but South Korea responded through goals from Son Heung-min and Oh Hyeon-gyu after the break.

Mexico salvaged a draw deep into stoppage time when AC Milan forward Santiago Gimenez scored in the 94th minute.

The two countries have also met twice at previous World Cups, with Mexico winning both encounters—3-1 in France 1998 and 2-1 in Russia 2018.

Predicted Lineups

Mexico: Raul Rangel; Jorge Sanchez, Edson Alvarez, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Gallardo; Erik Lira, Alvaro Fidalgo, Gilberto Mora; Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones.

South Korea: Kim Seung-gyu; Lee Gi-hyuk, Kim Min-jae, Lee Tae-seok, Seol Young-woo; Paik Seung-ho, Hwang In-beom; Lee Kang-in, Lee Jae-sung, Son Heung-min; Oh Hyeon-gyu.

Prediction

Mexico will look to build on its opening victory and capitalize on home support, but South Korea appears capable of providing a much sterner challenge than South Africa.

With both teams carrying momentum into the match, a closely contested encounter is expected. Mexico's home advantage could prove decisive, but South Korea's resilience and attacking quality make a draw a realistic outcome.

Prediction: Mexico 1-1 South Korea
