Yoon Suk Yeol Leaves South Korea's People Power Party

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced his departure from the People Power Party (PPP). “Though I depart from the party, I will continue to serve the cause of defending freedom and national sovereignty,” Yoon wrote on Friday, May 17, 2025, in a Facebook post quoted by Cosun, Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Yoon Suk Yeol reminded that the country is at a critical crossroads. “South Korea stands at a fateful juncture: Will liberal democracy survive or collapse? My decision to leave the party is part of my responsibility to safeguard the Republic of Korea,” he said.

Yoon Suk Yeol's Departure

As quoted from Anadolu, on Thursday, May 16, 2025, the PPP urged Yoon to leave the party. The reason is that the party wants to improve its chances in the presidential election on June 3. Meanwhile, the PPP is still behind the Democratic Party (DP). Acting leader of the PPP, Kim Young Tae, said Yoon Suk Yeol would make a rational decision. "As the interim leader, I would respectfully recommend the president leave the party," said Kim Young Tae.

This demand comes after a new survey on Thursday, May 16, 2025, confirmed that opposition candidate Lee Jae Myung maintained a commanding lead over the ruling party's candidate ahead of the presidential election on June 3, 2025. Lee, the DP candidate, outpaced his PPP rival Kim Moon Soo with 49 percent support against Kim Moon Soo's 27 percent, according to the National Barometer Survey (NBS). Lee Jun Seok, a candidate from the New Reform Party, is in the bottom position with 7 percent.

Approximately 57 percent of respondents indicated they supported a change of government by the DP. Meanwhile, another 32 percent hope to extend the previous ruling PPP's power. The liberal DP leads the poll with an overall support of 42 percent. The conservative PPP receives 28 percent support. This poll was conducted after months of political turmoil in South Korea, including the failure of the attempt in December to impose a military emergency. The Embrain Public survey agency, Kstat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research surveyed 1,000 people aged 18 and older.
