TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester City secured a crucial victory in the Manchester Derby during Matchweek 4 of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Despite playing with 10 men from the first half, The Citizens defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in a match that concluded early Monday morning, Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
Manchester City were reduced to 10 men after Phil Foden received a red card in the 22nd minute. Even with the numerical disadvantage, Enzo Maresca's squad managed to claim the win thanks to a goal from Erling Haaland.
This victory lifted Manchester City to second place in the standings with 12 points, while Manchester United dropped to 13th place with four points, according to the official Premier League website as cited by Antara.
The match was played at a high tempo from the start. Both teams played aggressively and engaged in several tough duels.
A pivotal incident occurred in the 22nd minute. Bruno Fernandes committed a foul on Foden; the Manchester City midfielder responded by kicking Fernandes in the stomach.
The referee immediately issued a red card to Foden. The decision was confirmed by VAR, forcing Manchester City to continue the match with 10 players.
With the numerical advantage, Manchester United began to dominate possession. However, the Red Devils' play lacked the effectiveness needed to break down City's defense.
United's best chance came from a Marcus Rashford free-kick that struck the goalpost. Meanwhile, City attempted occasional counter-attacks but struggled to build play after losing Foden.
The score remained 0-0 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Manchester City made a substitution, bringing off Rayan Cherki and bringing on Iliman Ndiaye.
Manchester United played more aggressively after the break. Kobbie Mainoo nearly put the hosts ahead, but his powerful shot hit the City goalpost.
Instead of conceding, City managed to score in the 60th minute. Josko Gvardiol delivered a cross from the left flank, which Haaland connected with to find the back of the United net. The goal was checked by VAR due to a potential offside. However, following the review, Haaland's goal was allowed to stand, giving Manchester City a 1-0 lead.
That lead boosted City's confidence. In the 67th minute, Enzo Fernandez nearly doubled the advantage with a shot from outside the penalty area, but the ball struck the woodwork.
MU continued to push for an equalizer for the remainder of the match. However, City's defense remained solid and disciplined, successfully stifling the home team's pressure.
MU's final chance came in stoppage time. Mbeumo received a through-ball from Fernandes and found himself one-on-one with Donnarumma, but the Manchester City goalkeeper managed to deny the winger's shot.
The score remained 0-1 until the final whistle. Manchester City secured three points at Old Trafford, despite playing with 10 men for over an hour.
