FITRA Suggests Ministerial Performance Review in Prabowo’s Govt for Budget Efficiency
The Secretary General of the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA), Misbah Hasan, underscores President Prabowo Subianto's move to issue budget efficiency directives. The group advises Prabowo to evaluate ministerial performance and reconsider cutting down the number of ministers in his Red and White Cabinet.
Misbah said that Prabowo’s oversized cabinet is one of the contributing factors to the swelling state expenditures in 2025. “Prabowo-Gibran must conduct a thorough evaluation on the ministers’ performance per 100 days, which ones to merge or eliminate,” he told Tempo, as quoted on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
The FITRA secretary-general believes the step can be taken to bolster the budget efficiency. “Compared to the current number of ministers, [reducing ministers] can significantly save the budget,” he added.
Each ministry, he said, requires administrative spending, such as office supplies (ATK), and facilities such as official vehicles and official travel. Slashing the number of cabinet ministers will simultaneously save the state budget.
Prabowo started his administration by increasing the number of ministries to 48, compared to Joko Widodo's 34, making it the largest since the Reformation. Misbah said Prabowo’s enthusiastic charades for budget efficiency are contradicted by the number of cabinet ministers.
The government previously targeted state revenue to reach Rp3,005.1 trillion in 2025, with state expenditure at Rp3,621.3 trillion.
Meanwhile, spending by ministries and institutions in 2025 reached Rp1,160.1 trillion, a Rp69.3 trillion surge compared to last year's target of Rp1,090 trillion.
