TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mikey Madison won her first Oscar for Best Actress thanks to her role in the film 'Anora'. The 25-year-old actress added to the achievements of director Sean Baker's film at the 2025 Oscars, which won five categories, including Best Film.
The woman, whose full name is Mikaela Madison Rosberg, embraced Sean Baker and other cast members before taking the stage to deliver her victory speech.
“Wow, this is very surreal,” Madison said, quoted by Associated Press. “Forgive me, I’m nervous."
She then read out a list of names from a piece of paper she had prepared. “I grew up in Los Angeles but Hollywood always felt so far away from me,” Madison said. “This is a dream come true. I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow.”
The film 'Anora' follows a headstrong Brooklyn stripper named Ani (Mikey Madison). She faces a winding journey back to the real world after marrying the young son of a Russian oligarch, Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn). The couple married in Las Vegas, and Ivan's derisive parents tried to annul the marriage.
The character Ani was specifically written for Mikey Madison by Sean Baker. Mikey Madison learned Russian and performed dangerous scenes herself in the film. Additionally, she learned pole dancing to portray an exotic dancer.
In the Best Actress category at the 2025 Oscars, Mikey Madison triumphed over Cynthia Erivo ('Wicked'), Karla Sofa Gascon ('Emilia Perez'), Demi Moore ('The Substance'), and Fernanda Torres ('I'm Still Here'). Mikey Madison has starred in nine films since her debut in 'Liza, Liza, Skies Are Grey' in 2017.
“I really don’t know what will happen in the future. I just really want to keep making movies,” said Mikey Madison backstage at the 97th Academy Awards.
“Making this film gave me confidence as an actor and as a creative. It really inspired me and reinvigorated my love of cinema and reminded me of the kind of work that I want to do," she added.
Previously, 62-year-old Demi Moore was widely expected to win Best Actress for her performance in 'The Substance', a role that had already earned her both a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award.
Quoted from New York Post, Dennis Quaid, was confident in her chances. Reflecting on their time working together, he recalled his early prediction. “I knew it like my second day working on that movie. I told Demi she’s going to win an Oscar for it.”
