5 Facts About Jakarta's Floods: From River Overflows to a Thousand Tons of Trash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floodwaters have inundated various parts of Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) since Monday, March 3, after the metro area experienced moderate to heavy rainfall from Sunday afternoon through the night. The downpour continued into early Monday, raising concerns about worsening conditions in several areas.

Key Facts about the Jakarta Floods

1. 59 Neighborhood Units in Jakarta Affected

Jakarta’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that 59 neighborhood units (RT) were submerged following prolonged rainfall early Tuesday, March 4. BPBD Jakarta's Head of Data and Information, Mohamad Yohan, stated that the affected areas were spread across West, South, and East Jakarta. The floods were triggered by water runoff from Bogor, West Java.

2. Overflow from Bogor’s Ciliwung River as the Main Cause

Yohan attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall and the overflow of several rivers. “The cause is high rainfall and overflow from the Ciliwung, Pesanggrahan, and Krukut rivers,” he stated in a written statement on Tuesday, March 4.

The Ciliwung River overflowed in Bogor on Sunday, March 2, affecting 17 neighborhood units (RT). The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded water levels ranging from 60 cm to 1 meter in three RTs in Bidara Cina and four RTs in Kampung Melayu. Five RTs in Cawang saw floodwaters between 80 cm and 1 meter, while three RTs in Gedong experienced levels between 1.5 and 3.5 meters, Yohan said.

3. Floodwaters As High As 3.7 Meters

Yohan reported that the highest recorded flood level was in Pejaten Timur, South Jakarta, where waters reached 3.7 meters. Additionally, four RTs in Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta, were submerged under 3 meters of water.

“The BPBD urges residents to remain cautious and alert for potential flooding,” he said.

4. Over 1,000 Tons of Trash Swept into Jakarta

Jakarta’s Environmental Agency recorded 1,500 tons of waste piling up following the heavy rainfall on Sunday night, March 2, 2025. Agency head Asep Kuswanto stated that the trash was collected from the Ciliwung River Trash Filter in T.B. Simatupang, South Jakarta.

“Our teams continue working to ensure the Ciliwung River’s flow remains unobstructed and that Jakarta is protected from potential flooding caused by clogged waterways,” Asep stated in a written report on Monday, March 3, 2025.

He added that 60 sanitation workers were deployed to handle the waste, utilizing seven heavy machines, including amphibious excavators, material handlers, and wheel loaders.

5. Deputy Governor Encourages Residents to Move to Public Housing

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno urged Jakarta residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to relocate to government-owned low-cost apartments (rusun), emphasizing that these facilities offer safer and more suitable living conditions.

“I always take every opportunity to promote this. Let’s move to rusun,” Rano stated after inspecting the flood-affected area on Kamboja Street, Lebak Bulus, Cilandak, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 4.
