TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fasting can be particularly challenging for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), especially if they don’t carefully choose their meals for suhoor and iftar. Consuming the wrong foods can trigger acid reflux, leading to discomfort such as heartburn, nausea, and bloating.

According to Hermina Hospitals, the following foods should be avoided during fasting for those with GERD:

  1. Fatty Foods

High-fat foods such as fatty meats, fried foods, coconut milk-based dishes, and chocolate can increase stomach acid production and slow digestion.

  1. Acidic Foods

Fruits with high acidity, including oranges, grapes, lemons, and kiwis, as well as vinegar-based foods, can trigger a burning sensation in the chest due to acid reflux, especially when consumed on an empty stomach.

  1. Difficult-to-Digest Foods

Chocolate, cheese, nuts, and rich cakes slow gastric emptying, increasing the risk of acid reflux.

  1. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods can stimulate excessive acid production and cause stomach discomfort.

  1. Carbonated Drinks

Soda and other carbonated beverages contain gas that can worsen acid reflux symptoms.

In addition to dietary choices, certain medications and supplements can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle responsible for preventing acid reflux. This can further aggravate GERD symptoms, causing additional discomfort.

Triggers include chocolate, mint (such as peppermint and spearmint), and heavily processed foods. Certain medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers like aspirin, nitrates, and supplements containing iron or potassium, may also exacerbate GERD symptoms.
