TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Berlin is the home of the Berlin Film Festival, often referred to as the Berlinale, which is one of the largest film festivals in the world.
The festival, which has entered its 75th edition, took place on February 13–23, 2025. The event brought international cinema stars and new talents to Berlin to participate in supporting careers, projects, dreams, and visions.
Berlinale features 200 films of various genres, durations, and formats in different parts of the event or presentation each year.
During the film screening or presentation, the audience is invited to discuss and understand various aspects within them. They will hold discussions attended by expert panels to facilitate active participation.
Berlin is one of the world-class cities with diverse panoramas and a strong classic European accent. It's worth visiting and exploring the German capital.
Tourist Sites in Berlin
1. Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is one of the iconic buildings in Berlin. This large neoclassical gate was built by the order of King Frederick Wilhelm II in 1788, inspired by the design of the Propylaea in Athens' Acropolis. The monument is made of sandstone, is 26 meters high, and stands on Pariser Platz in the Mitte district, just one block from the Reichstag.
2. Reichstag
The Reichstag (Reichstagsgebude) was initially completed in 1894 and served as the home of the German Empire until it burned down in 1933.
This Neo-Renaissance building was no longer used until after the German reunification, when it was heavily damaged. After a 10-year reconstruction, the Reichstag finally became the German Parliament building in 1999. Its glass dome is one of the main features of this reconstruction.
3. Museum Island
Museum Island, or Museumsinsel, is located between the River Spree and Kupfergraben. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Berlin. This includes the Altes Museum, built in 1830, the Neues Museum, reconstructed and reopened in 2009 after being destroyed in World War II, and the Alte Nationalgalerie which showcases Neoclassical, Impressionist, and early Modernist works.
The Pergamon Museum, one of the most popular, exhibits the Museum of Islamic Art and the Ishtar Gate. The Humboldt Forum opened in 2019, houses the Berlin Ethnological Museum and the Asian Art Museum.
4. Berlin Wall Memorial
The Berlin Wall Memorial is located on Bernauer Straße. The monument has a spacious area used for outdoor exhibitions, a documentation center, a monument for the victims of the division, and the Reconciliation Chapel. There is also the famous border fortification wall and the 1,300-meter-long East Side Gallery. About 118 artists from 21 countries painted the preserved section of the wall.
5. Gendarmenmarkt
Gendarmenmarkt, one of the largest squares in Berlin, is dominated by three historic buildings: the Konzerthaus, the French Cathedral (Franzsischer Dom), and the German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom).
The beautiful 17th-century square is now one of the main tourist sites in Berlin and hosts various public events every year, including classical concerts on the steps of the Konzerthaus during the summer. In winter, it becomes one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets.
