TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 500-kilogram bomb was found at the Gare du Nord station in Paris, France. Gare du Nord is the busiest train station in Europe.
The station ceased operations on Friday while waiting for the unexploded World War II heritage bomb to be defused. As cited from Reuters, all Eurostar train journeys were cancelled.
Railway workers found the 500-kilogram bomb about two meters underground around 02:30 GMT in Saint-Denis, in the northern outskirts of Paris. The bomb was discovered during bridge construction work. Police stated that remnants of war heritage were found in the area.
Although the bomb was found 2.5 kilometers from the station, its location was beneath the tracks, wrote one of the railway line operators in a post on X. Commuter trains and national and international services including Eurostar were all halted. The Paris government brought in bomb disposal experts.
Police evacuated 200 people living near the security perimeter set up around the bomb. Other residents in the area were urged to stay indoors during the operation, according to the department's prefecture.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot later announced that the mine clearance operation had ended. Train traffic would resume gradually from 17:00 GMT.
Eurostar, which was forced to cancel all trains to and from Gare du Nord on Friday, said services would resume on Saturday, March 8, 2025. The Eurostar website advised travelers to reschedule their journeys. Aside from major disruptions to train traffic, some roads around the capital were closed.
About 220 million passengers pass through Gare du Nord each year, traveling to and from destinations in northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, and crossing over to London.
Clemence Fandard, a user interface designer in Paris, said the train departing at 06:20 in the morning to Amsterdam was initially delayed for 45 minutes before being cancelled. "I have heard reports of such incidents from time to time. We are less fortunate!" she said.
Another traveler, Kasman Ibrahimi, said he had planned to take a train to Cologne in Germany from Gare du Nord. He switched to find an alternative route.
