TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred in the Sukabumi region, West Java, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 5:12 p.m. local time. The earthquake's epicenter was located offshore, approximately 73 kilometers southwest of Bayah, Banten, at coordinates 7.59°S and 106.18°E.
Classified as a shallow earthquake, it originated at a depth of 26 kilometers. "The earthquake was triggered by active fault movement beneath the seabed," Hartanto, head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, said in an official statement.
BMKG's intensity mapping and community reports indicate the strongest tremors were felt in Ciracap at Intensity Level III MMI, where vibrations were noticeable indoors. In Sukabumi, Cicurug, Cidahu, Cidolog, and Pelabuhan Ratu, the quake registered at Level II–III MMI, with mild shaking felt by some residents and light objects swaying.
As of now, BMKG has received no reports of structural damage. Additionally, as of 5:39 pm, no aftershocks have been detected.
BMKG advises the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading or acting upon unverified information.
