TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The delegation from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Airlangga (Unair) achieved the 2nd place in Best Combine Memorial at The Philip C. Jessup International Moot competition. The team consisted of Diah Anggraeni Nurkhalisa, Anak Agung Gede Fabianara Danurwenda, Aurelliano Jovan Meydianto, Putri Ayu Mustikaweni Adhijoso, and Olivia Balqis Allika.
Prior to the international final, they participated in the national competition on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the University of Indonesia and emerged as the champions.
Diah stated that The Philip C. Jessup competition is a prestigious event for law students internationally. The competition mechanism consists of the collection of written memorials and oral pleadings. Every year, the competition covers various and interesting topics within the scope of International Public Law.
Discussing Aegean Sea Case
Diah mentioned that this year they discussed a case regarding the Aegean Sea. The case is related to the relationship between The Union of Ambrosia as the applicant and The Republic of Rovinia as the respondent. She added that the Unair delegation had the opportunity to understand four different cases related to the Aegean Sea.
"The topics discussed include the formation of regional organizations, legal immunity of government officials accused of serious human rights violations due to the receding coastline in maritime zones. Moreover, the rights and obligations of international community members when two people declare themselves as presidents of a country," Diah quoted from the written statement on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
Diah mentioned the need for accurate understanding to comprehend various different topics. Each topic has different legal issues, such as understanding whether a topic falls under the authority of the International Court of Justice or not.
"Our task as delegates is to play the role of an applicant or respondent. Understanding legal theory by relating it to the topic is the key to success," she expressed.
Consultation with Law Firms
Diah revealed that during the preparation, their delegation consulted with several law firms. The consultations took place during the selection process of academic paper writing and oral pleading. The purpose of these consultations was to understand and adjust the substance as well as direct adjudication practices.
"The law firms that helped us included SSEK Law Firm, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, Ginting & Reksodiputro in association with A&O Shearman, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung, AKHH Law Firm. Good time management became the solution for our team to maximize practice, even amidst the end-of-semester exams," she said.
