TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Arsenal drew a 1-1 tie with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Wednesday local time.
Arsenal took the lead through a Viktor Gyokeres penalty, but Atletico Madrid equalized through a Julian Alvarez penalty, according to UEFA records.
This draw means that both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid must win by any score in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal.
The second leg of the Champions League semifinal between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 2:00 a.m. Jakarta time at the Emirates Stadium in London.
The match started at a moderate pace, with both Atletico and Arsenal failing to create any clear-cut chances.
This changed as Arsenal was awarded a penalty, with Viktor Gyokeres stepping up and successfully executing his goal after his shot was unstoppable by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, making it 1-0 in the 44th minute.
Entering the second half, Atletico ramped up their offensive intensity in search of an equalizer, one of which came through Julian Alvarez's shot that went wide of the Arsenal goal.
Atletico had a chance to equalize after the referee awarded a penalty kick for Arsenal full-back Ben White's handball in the penalty area.
Alvarez stepped up to take the penalty, successfully executing his shot, as Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was unable to stop it.
Antoine Griezmann had a chance to turn the game around with a shot, but the ball failed to find the back of the net.
Atletico had another chance through Nahuel Molina, but his shot sailed just over the Arsenal crossbar.
In the remaining time, Atletico continued to attack the Arsenal defense, but the score remained 1-1.
