TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Kao Kim Hourn, praised Vietnam's role in Southeast Asia since becoming a permanent member of ASEAN in 1995. He highlighted Vietnam's contributions to the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement.
Kao explained that the free trade agreement has successfully strengthened the ASEAN region as a major hub in the global supply chain. Starting as a low-income country, Vietnam has now become one of the influential members in ASEAN, said Kao.
"The sustained high economic growth in the country has driven it to achieve upper middle-income status in the near future," Kao said during the commemoration event of Vietnam's 30 years of membership at the ASEAN Secretariat office in South Jakarta on Monday, March 10, 2025.
Kao delivered the statement in front of the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, who was on a state visit to Indonesia on March 9-11, 2025.
Furthermore, Kao mentioned that Vietnam's share of the ASEAN GDP has doubled from 6 percent in 2000 to 12 percent currently. This, according to Kao, reflects its continuously developing economic status in the region.
"This remarkable achievement has not only improved the welfare of the Vietnamese people but also significantly strengthened ASEAN," said Kao.
Moreover, Kao stated that ASEAN's strength can only be maintained if each member country develops and remains committed to building a regional community.
"With ASEAN's progress in adopting the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 this year, Vietnam's leadership and active participation continue to play a vital role in shaping our collective future," he said.
Not only that, Kao also commended Vietnam's proactive and constructive role in enhancing and enriching ASEAN's external relations. He also highlighted Vietnam's role in aligning its foreign policies with ASEAN's strategic views.
This synergy, Kao conveyed, is evident in Vietnam's global partnership network, including comprehensive strategic partnerships with all major powers and main Southeast Asian neighbors.
The celebration of Vietnam's 30 years of membership in ASEAN was attended by various figures from several country representatives. The celebration was also enlivened by a performance from the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra led by conductor Tran Vuong Thach and other Vietnamese musicians.
