TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Kao Kim Hourn praised the leadership of the Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, who has played a significant role in Vietnam's administration. Kao praised To Lam as Vietnam celebrated its 30th anniversary of joining ASEAN.
"The venerable quality of To Lam undoubtedly embodies the core of a transformational leadership that is crucial for Vietnam and ASEAN in this challenging and exciting time," Kao said at the ASEAN Secretariat office in South Jakarta on Monday, March 10, 2025.
Kao assessed that To Lam has a significant role in Vietnam in national security, economic governance, and foreign relations.
Before assuming the position of secretary-general, Kao explained, To Lam served as Vietnam's Minister of Public Security, playing a vital role in strengthening law enforcement, maintaining national security, and advancing Vietnam's global partnerships in security and defense.
"As an experienced leader with ambitious vision and unwavering spirit, the venerable To Lam has steered Vietnam through a crucial era of development," Kao said.
Furthermore, Kao argued that To Lam's leadership came at a critical time when Vietnam was working to transform its economy amidst an increasingly challenging and fragmented global landscape.
Under To Lam's leadership, Kao conveyed Vietnam is undergoing comprehensive administrative reforms to enhance state apparatus efficiency and boost its economy. Kao believes To Lam can expand Vietnam's global engagement and deepen cooperation within ASEAN and its surroundings.
"His insights today undoubtedly will illuminate the path forward for Vietnam and ASEAN as a whole," he added.
In this regard, To Lam expressed his delight at being able to visit the ASEAN headquarters in Indonesia.
"This is where ASEAN leaders make important decisions that shape the development and future not only of Southeast Asia but also the broader global landscape," To Lam stated.
Various figures from several representative countries attended the celebration of Vietnam's 30 years of membership in ASEAN. The celebration was also enlivened by a performance from the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tran Vuong Thach and other Vietnamese musicians.
