Banning Retailers from Selling 3-Kg LPG Is Not Prabowo's Policy, House Deputy Speaker Says

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Daily Chairperson of the Gerindra Party, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, claimed that the policy banning retailers from selling 3-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) did not originate from President Prabowo Subianto.

"Actually, this was not the President's policy to impose the ban yesterday," said the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

However, according to Dasco, the president, who is also the Gerindra Party chair, has now stepped in after the restriction on 3-kilogram LPG sales made it difficult for the public to obtain the green-cylinder gas. Dasco said that Prabowo asked for the subsidized gas to be sold at retail again starting today, Tuesday.

Since February 1, 2025, the government has defined that retailers will no longer sell 3-kilogram LPG. The public can only purchase it at official Pertamina distribution points at the predetermined highest retail price (HET).

Prabowo then ordered the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, to allow retailers to continue selling 3-kilogram LPG.

"The president has instructed the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to reactivate existing retailers to resume selling as usual starting today," said the Deputy Speaker of the DPR.

According to Dasco, 3-kilogram LPG retailers will eventually need to register as sub-distributors to continue selling the green-cylinder gas. However, Prabowo wants retailers to be able to keep selling 3-kilogram LPG during the partial registration process to become sub-distributors.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources previously said that the ban on retail sales of subsidized gas was implemented to prevent price manipulation. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia clarified that there were no issues regarding the stock of LPG, which is still imported, as its quota and subsidies, remain normal and unrestricted.

However, the problem lies in its distribution to the public. "The reports we received indicate that some people are manipulating prices. I'm just being honest," Bahlil said when met at his office on Monday, February 3, 2025.

Bahlil explained that the government provides an LPG subsidy of IDR 12,000 per kilogram. Since one cylinder contains 3 kilograms, the total subsidy per cylinder is IDR 36,000. "Based on the reports we received, some of these subsidies are not being properly targeted," he stated.
