TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - The Bekasi City government stated that it will soon schedule a meeting with the central government regarding handling of floods. Bekasi Deputy Mayor Abdul Harris Bobihoe said, the plan for a meeting with the National Development Planning Agency and the Ministry of Public Works will discuss the latest solutions for flood mitigation.
"Whether to build embankments or dredge the river, we will first coordinate which is better," Bobihoe told Tempo, Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Later, he continued, the Bekasi flood handling meeting will also involve experts in consideration and assessment. The aim is to ensure that the solutions to be executed do not cause environmental damage and losses to the community.
"In the future, flood mitigation efforts will be even better," he said.
Furthermore, Bobihoe claimed that the Bekasi City government had actually predicted the arrival of a major flood within this five-year period. However, he said, the mitigation efforts carried out were not in line with the actual situation in the field.
"This time, the water flow is much greater than before, beyond our predictions," said the Gerindra Party politician.
Heavy rain with high intensity in the upstream areas of Kali Bekasi for the past three days has resulted in a significant increase in water levels.
The Bekasi City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded that the water level in the upstream area of Kali Bekasi reached 875 centimeters, which is twice the maximum water volume that Kali Bekasi can hold, which is 350 centimeters.
Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto said, the overflowing of Kali Bekasi early Tuesday made 8 out of 12 districts in Bekasi City flooded. The inundation even reached the city center area on Jenderal Sudirman Street.
"This morning, Bekasi City is paralyzed," said Tri, last Tuesday.
Yesterday, the Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Abdul Muhari said, a total of 18,738 households in Bekasi City were affected by the flood, with no casualties recorded.
"However, the flood has hindered the mobility and activities of the community," said Muhari.
