TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI) plans to hold a protest at the Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta on Friday, June 12, 2026. Chair of BEM UI Yatalathof Ma'shum Imawan said that the students demand President Prabowo Subianto to stop the free nutritious meal (MBG) project and the Red and White village cooperative.
"Stop the MBG program and the development of the Red and White village cooperative," he said in a written statement on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
In addition, BEM UI also demands Prabowo to halt the waste of the state budget, lower the prices of basic necessities and fuel. They also ask Prabowo to stop militarism in the civilian sphere.
"Prabowo should also stop evading and acknowledge the government's mistakes," he said.
These demands are the result of the consolidation of UI students on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. He said that the demands were formulated based on the current economic and democratic issues in Indonesia.
According to him, Indonesia is a wealthy country. However, the people are not prosperous. Economic growth in Indonesia has even collapsed. Government policies have only strengthened this collapse.
"Fiscal policies are leaky, the independence of the central bank is taken away. Not to mention that the government's communication to the public is far from appropriate," he said.
He sees the government rejecting the current conditions. The government, he said, degrades the struggle and criticism voiced by the people. "State apparatus is also used as a tool to silence those who speak up," he said.
Prior to this, BEM UI held a focus group discussion (FGD) with student elements from UI and national consolidation on Monday, June 8, 2026. One of the topics discussed was the economic conditions in Indonesia.
In response, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that the government appreciates the aspirations and inputs regarding the demands of the student group for the government to strengthen the exchange rate of the rupiah.
However, he said that the current economic problems in Indonesia are not easy to overcome. "Certainly influenced by many factors," he said in the DPR complex, Jakarta, on Monday, June 8, 2026.
