BMKG: 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has informed about an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 that shook the Waingapu area, East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 02:21 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), as quoted by Antara.

Based on data on the BMKG website, the earthquake's epicenter was 36 km northeast of Waingapu with a depth of 10 km. The coordinates of the earthquake's epicenter were recorded at 9.34 degrees South Latitude and 120.34 degrees East Longitude. BMKG confirmed that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The quake was felt on a scale of MMI III-IV in Waingapu, and MMI III in Ruteng. MMI III means the tremor is felt indoors and feels like a passing truck. Meanwhile, MMI IV means the tremor is felt by many people indoors, and by some people outdoors. Earthquake tremors can cause pottery to break, windows or doors to creak, and walls to make a sound.
