TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has corrected the narrative circulating on social media by emphasizing that the phenomenon of bediding, or a drop in air temperature from night to morning, is not an extreme weather event.
"It's important to understand that bediding is not a 'sweeping' phenomenon like an extreme weather event, but rather a seasonal condition when the air feels colder due to reduced cloud cover," said BMKG Director of Public Meteorology Ida Pramuwardani on Saturday, as quoted by ANTARA.
He explained that the intense cold from night to morning occurs because, in the absence of clouds, the Earth's back radiation can be released directly into the atmosphere. This condition is exacerbated by low humidity and an increased presence of dry air masses from Australia.
BMKG expert added that the characteristics of this seasonal cold temperature are usually felt beginning in June and increase from July to August, especially on clear nights when the easterly winds, or Australian monsoon, strengthen.
BMKG also emphasized that the bediding phenomenon does not occur evenly throughout Indonesia, but only in areas with clear skies, low humidity, and decreasing rainfall. The areas that usually feel this condition earlier and more clearly are dominated by the southern part of Indonesia.
These areas include East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, the southern region of Java, the highlands of Java, and parts of southern Sumatra such as South Sumatra and Lampung.
For this reason, he suggested that people wear warm clothes and drink plenty of water to make activities more comfortable if their area experiences colder-than-usual conditions.
This phenomenon was previously widely discussed by netizens on various social media platforms, including the Instagram account @4climate, which reported that cold temperatures were beginning to hit several southern regions of Indonesia. Even Batu, Malang, East Java, reportedly experienced temperatures of 13-16 degrees Celsius between 3:00 and 6:00 AM.
Although the definition of bediding in the post generally aligns with the meteorological explanation, BMKG deems it necessary to educate the public on the difference between normal seasonal climate variations and extreme weather phenomena. This is evident in the public's comments on social media posts.
