TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of high waves that are potentially occurring in several maritime regions of Indonesia on February 21-24, 2025.

BMKG forecaster, Dyah Ayu Dhamayanti, stated that the cyclone seed 99S (13.3LS 121.2BT) in the South Indian Ocean NTT triggers an increase in wind speed and wave height.

According to Dyah, the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from Northwest to Northeast with wind speeds ranging from 8-25 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia generally move from Southwest to Northwest with wind speeds ranging from 8-30 knots.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the South Indian Ocean south of NTT," Dyah said in a written statement on Friday, February 21, 2025.

These wind conditions, Dyah said, caused an increase in waves ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters likely to occur in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Indian Ocean west of the Mentawai Islands, the Indian Ocean west of Lampung, the Indian Ocean south of West Java, the Indian Ocean south of Yogyakarta, the Indian Ocean south of Bali, the Indian Ocean south of NTT, the central Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua, the central Arafuru Sea, and the northern Natuna Sea.

Similar waves, according to Dyah, may occur in the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands, Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu, Indian Ocean south of Banten, Indian Ocean south of Central Java, Indian Ocean south of East Java, Indian Ocean south of NTB, western Sulawesi Sea, eastern Sulawesi Sea, Pacific Ocean north of Southwest Papua, Pacific Ocean north of Papua West, and eastern Arafuru Sea.

Higher waves ranging from 2.5-4.0 meters are likely to occur in the Pacific Ocean north of West Maluku. "The potential high waves in several of these regions could pose a risk to maritime safety," Dyah said.

BMKG urges the public to always be cautious, especially for fishers who are active with transportation modes such as fishing boats, to avoid sailing when wind speeds exceed 15 knots and wave heights are above 1.25 meters.

Barge ships need to be cautious when wind speeds exceed 16 knots and wave heights are above 1.5 meters.

Meanwhile, ferry ships need to be cautious when wind speeds exceed 21 knots and wave heights are above 2.5 meters. For large vessels such as cargo ships and cruise ships, they are advised to avoid when wind speeds exceed 27 knots and wave heights are above 4.0 meters.
