TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of high waves that potentially occur in several maritime areas in Indonesia on February 20 to 23, 2025. This includes those caused by cyclone 99S in the Timor Sea, southeast of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

BMKG forecaster Apdillah Akbar stated that cyclone 99S triggered high wind speed and wave height. "The highest wind speeds are observed in the southern Indian Ocean off of NTT," he said in a written statement on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Apdillah added that the wind pattern information in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from northwest to northeast at speeds ranging from 8-25 knots. While in the southern part of Indonesia, it generally moves from southwest to northwest with wind speeds ranging from 8-30 knots.

According to Apdillah, based on this wind pattern, the possibility of waves reaching a height of 1.25 - 2.50 meters is likely to occur in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, and in the Indian Ocean from west Aceh to west Lampung. The same potential exists in the southern Indian Ocean from Banten to the south of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), except for the south of East Java.

A similar potential exists in the Arafura Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean off of Papua, the northern Pacific Ocean off of West Papua, the northern Pacific Ocean off of Southwest West Papua, the Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, and the North Natuna Sea.

Meanwhile, higher waves, in the range of 2.5 - 4.0 meters, are likely to occur in the southern Indian Ocean off of East Java, the southern Indian Ocean off of NTT, and the northern Pacific Ocean off of Maluku. "The potential for high waves in these areas may pose risks to maritime safety," said Apdillah.

BMKG urges the public to keep vigilant, especially for fishermen who sail with fishing boats to avoid wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters. It also advises barge ships to be vigilant for wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters.

Apdillah stated that ferries must avoid wind speeds exceeding 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. Furthermore, Apdillah advised large-sized vessels such as cargo ships and cruise ships to avoid wind speeds exceeding 27 knots and wave heights above 4.0 meters.

"We urge residents living and working in coastal areas that are likely to experience high waves to always be vigilant," he said.
