TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that several regions in Indonesia will experience light to heavy rain today, Thursday, January 23, 2025. BMKG Weather Forecaster, Sentia Arianti, said the estimate was based on an analysis of atmospheric dynamics that are actively influencing weather patterns in Indonesia.
Sentia said that cyclonic circulation was monitored in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the western waters of West Kalimantan, the Sulawesi Sea, and the Timor Sea. The cyclonic circulation in the four locations forms an area of wind speed slowdown or convergence that extends from the northern coast of northern West Kalimantan to the Natuna Sea, the Central Kalimantan Strait, in the Sulawesi Sea and from East Nusa Tenggara to the eastern waters of East Nusa Tenggara.
"These conditions can increase the potential for rain cloud growth and sea wave heights around the cyclonic circulation and along the convergence area," said Sentia in his statement, Wednesday, January 22, 2024.
According to Sentia, this combination of atmospheric dynamics causes the potential for moderate to heavy rain and extreme weather. Areas that need to be aware of this potential include parts of Sumatra, most of Java, most of Kalimantan, most of Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Papua, and Papua.
In addition, it is also necessary to be aware of the increase in wind speeds reaching more than 25 knots (46 kilometers per hour). Gusts of wind with this speed were observed in the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines, which can increase the height of waves in these waters.
In general, on the island of Sumatra, said Sentia, light rain will fall in the cities of Banda Aceh, Medan, Bengkulu, Palembang, and Pangkal Pinang. Meanwhile, thick cloudy weather is likely to cover the cities of Pekanbaru and Jambi.
Then on the island of Java, light rain is likely to fall in the cities of Serang, Semarang, and Yogyakarta. "Be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in the cities of Jakarta, Bandung and also Surabaya," he said.
On the islands of Bali and Nusa Tenggara, light rain is predicted to fall in the cities of Denpasar and Mataram. However, it is necessary to be aware of rain accompanied by lightning in Kupang.
For the Kalimantan Island region, light rain is likely to fall in Samarinda City and Banjarmasin. Moderate rain is predicted to fall in Pontianak, while rain accompanied by lightning will occur in Tanjung Selor and Palangkaraya.
On Sulawesi Island, said Sentia, light rain is predicted to fall in Manado City, Palu, and Makassar. Meanwhile, heavy rain has the potential to occur in Mamuju and rain accompanied by lightning in Kendari.
Then in Maluku and Papua, light rain is likely to fall in Ternate City, Ambon, Manokwari, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya. "It is predicted that there will be moderate rain in Sorong City and Nabire and be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Merauke City," said Sentia.
