TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s rice production from January to March 2025 is expected to grow, reaching 15.06 million tons of dry milled rice grain (GKG), said the Acting Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti.
According to her, the rice production in the beginning of this year increased by 5.18 million tons GKG compared to the same period in 2024, with 9.88 million tons GKG.
"That constitutes a 52.40 percent hike compared to the same period last year,” said Amalia in a press conference at the BPS Office, Jakarta, on Monday, February 3, 2025.
The projection, Amalia said, is based on the assessment of the results of rice production last year, which was made in December.
BPS also reported that rice production throughout 2024 declined 1.54 percent from the previous year, with 30.62 million tons. “The decrease is attributed to the slowdown in production in the first quarter of 2024 due to the prolonged El Niño phenomenon,” said Amalia.
Amalia also mentioned that rice prices have surged at the beginning of this year, including at the milling, wholesale, and retail levels. Amalia said that the average price of rice at the milling level in January 2025 increased by 0.92 percent m-o-m and dropped by 4.30 percent y-o-y.
Meanwhile, rice at the wholesale level inflated by 0.56 percent m-o-m and 1.11 percent y-o-y in January 2025. At the retail level, the price of rice also experienced inflation up to 0.36 percent m-o-m and 2.29 percent y-o-y.
The BPS chief said the average rice prices cover regions throughout Indonesia as well as encompass different types of rice.
