TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the United States' decision on Wednesday, August 5, to revoke the visa of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, calling the move irresponsible and rash.
As ANTARA reported, speaking in an interview with the YouTube channel Meteoro Brasil, Lula stated that the decision was unjustified for two countries that have maintained diplomatic relations for over two centuries. He also added that Brazil would not accept a new ambassador before the general election scheduled for this coming October.
On Tuesday, August 4, the U.S. State Department announced the revocation of visas in retaliation for Brazil's refusal last month to issue visas to two U.S. officials and its alleged delays in approving Daniel Pereira, the U.S. ambassadorial nominee for Brazil, whom U.S. President Donald Trump put forward.
In response, Lula stated that Washington itself has shown no urgency regarding its diplomatic presence in Brazil, given that the U.S. Embassy in the country has been left without a head of mission for more than a year and a half.
"They expect us to act on their timeline? That is neither fair nor acceptable. We demand to be treated with respect," Lula said.
The Brazilian government on Tuesday strongly condemned the U.S. State Department's decision to change the visa status of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, calling the reasons cited by the U.S. incorrect.
