TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has officially declared that 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri, or Eid al-Fitr, will fall on Monday, March 31, 2025. This decision was reached following a closed isbat session held at the Haji Mohammad Rasjidi Auditorium of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Central Jakarta on Saturday afternoon, March 29, 2025, concluding at 19:05 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

"It has been agreed that 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri, or Eid al-Fitr, will be observed on Monday, March 31, 2025," announced Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar during a press conference detailing the isbat session's results.

Prior to the isbat session, Cecep Nurwendaya, a member of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Hisab Rukyat Team, presented his findings regarding the crescent moon's position on 29 Ramadan 1446 Hijri.

He explained that, according to the MABIMS (Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) criteria, the crescent moon's position in the Indonesian region on 29 Ramadan 1446 Hijri, or March 29, 2025, did not meet the required minimum crescent height of 3° and minimum elongation of 6.4°.

"In the Republic of Indonesia, the MABIMS criteria for the beginning of the lunar month are not met, therefore, 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri will fall on Monday, March 31, 2025," said Cecep.

The isbat process began with a seminar on the crescent moon's position for the start of Shawwal 1446 Hijri at 16:30 WIB, continuing until near sunset. This seminar was attended by representatives of embassies from friendly nations, astronomy experts, Islamic mass organizations, and various related agencies, including LAPAN, BMKG, BRIN, and the Bosscha Planetarium. The closed-door isbat session then commenced, scheduled to begin around 18:20 WIB.

Muhammadiyah had previously announced that 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri would also fall on Monday, March 31, 2025. This decision was made in conjunction with their determination of 1 Ramadan 1446 Hijri, based on guidelines from the Muhammadiyah's Tarjih and Tajdid Council.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had also released a crescent moon prediction for the determination of Eid al-Fitr 2025. Based on the agency's calculations, it was projected that this year's Eid celebration in Indonesia would be observed simultaneously by both the government and Muhammadiyah, on Monday, March 31, 2025.
