TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, revealed that his agency is developing nuclear technology. He announced it in front of President Prabowo Subianto at a BRIN exhibition at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
According to Arif, BRIN is developing two technologies: "Nuclear and space technologies, which serve as levers for energy sovereignty, health, food security, and even regional surveillance," Arif said in his remarks on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
BRIN, he said, is also building research facilities throughout Indonesia, including nuclear reactors. "Bapak President, BRIN is building a network of strategic research facilities spread across Indonesia," he said.
These facilities include a nuclear reactor, the largest observatory in Southeast Asia, a satellite ground station, the most comprehensive genomics laboratory in Southeast Asia, and a high-performance computing center ranked among the world's top 500.
Arif stated that BRIN aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the national industry through research and innovation. BRIN is developing technologies in several areas, including the semiconductor industry, genomics for the biotech industry, and artificial intelligence (AI).
"Mastery of these technologies will determine whether Indonesia can become a user or owner of our technology in the future," he said.
