TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Nuclear Reactor Technology Research Center at the National Research and Innovation Agency (PRTRN BRIN) Topan Setiadipura said now is the right time to study artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in nuclear reactor technology.
Topan stated that PRTRN BRIN is assigned to develop nuclear reactor technology, including 12 research groups. It is also tasked to communicate with industries from abroad, including through numerous meetings with American, Japanese, and Korean parties.
"Collaborating with Kunihiko Nabeshima from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) or other researchers from China who work in the field of AI would be very beneficial for PRTRN BRIN, particularly in technical aspects, research, and development," said Topan, quoted from the BRIN press release on Monday, February 24, 2025.
According to him, AI is a new field that can be further discussed, particularly in technical aspects, research, and development (R&D). "Although nuclear reactor technology is quite slow in accepting technological updates, and if something is done scientifically, it will be very good for us," he said.
Meanwhile, Kunihiko Nabeshima from the Nuclear Human Resource Development Center Tokai, JAEA, expressed the impact of the Fukushima accident on the current status of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Japan, and AI technology in nuclear energy.
The BRIN and JAEA meeting focuses on AI technology in the nuclear sector. Kunihiko said AI is used in the nuclear energy sector to support its technology. AI can assist in emergency responses for nuclear access.
Currently, AI can monitor reactors and provide information to operators. "Furthermore, AI can provide recommendations on actions that operators need to take to maintain reactor safety," he added.
"We hope to collaborate with BRIN, because around 20 years ago we built this investigation system using neural networks, and now we are developing new technology," he said.
