TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In retaliation for U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, Canada announced Saturday night that it would impose 25 percent tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s retaliation comes as he and Trump have yet to talk about a full-blown trade war, he said at a lengthy press conference Saturday night, according to CTV News.

Canada’s retaliatory measures will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2025, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products within 21 days, to allow Canadian companies and supply chains to find alternatives.

Trudeau announced the federal government’s phased approach in an address to Canadians from Parliament Hill, where he urged citizens to “choose Canada” when making purchases and travel plans.

“That might mean choosing Canadian rye over Kentucky bourbon, or not drinking Florida orange juice at all,” he said. “Unfortunately, the actions taken by the White House today are dividing us rather than uniting us.”

In his comments, Trudeau also noted the “real” consequences for Americans of Trump’s decision to impose broad-based tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian imports, as well as 10 percent energy tariffs.

“Tariffs on Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially closing American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities. They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, fuel at the pump,” Trudeau said.

Among the items Trudeau said will soon become more expensive for U.S. consumers are beer, wine, vegetables, clothing, shoes, appliances, furniture and sporting goods. Trudeau said Canada is also considering “a number” of non-tariff measures related to energy and minerals.

The major announcements come after weeks of anticipation and diplomatic efforts to avoid this moment, and after Trudeau met with his cabinet and prime ministers on Saturday to discuss a national and historic response.

“If President Trump wants to usher in a new golden era for the United States, the better way is to partner with Canada, not punish us,” Trudeau said, later noting that he has been “reaching out” to Trump since his inauguration and that he hopes “to speak with him soon.”

U.S. President Donald Trump made good on his threat to impose massive tariffs on Canada by signing an executive order imposing them on Saturday.

Trump’s sweeping trade action is set to take effect Tuesday.

The federal government was notified by the U.S. on Saturday morning that Canada, Mexico and China would be hit with tariffs.
