TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, told U.S. President Donald Trump over the phone that his tariffs on Canadian imports were “a very dumb thing to do.” He said Ottawa will be striking back against the policy.
Trudeau accused Trump of wanting to ruin Canada's economy. Trump and Trudeau spoke several hours after Trump launched a trade war against Canada and Mexico.
In response to Trump's actions, Trudeau then announced a 25 percent tariff, equivalent to C$30 billion (Rp34 trillion), on goods imported from the United States. If necessary, Canada aims to target another C$125 billion in import tariffs in the next 21 days.
"There is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs," said Trudeau, quoted from Reuters.
Trudeau said Canada will challenge U.S. policies at the World Trade Organization (WTO), even though the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada is already in place.
"Canadians are reasonable and we are polite, but we will not back down from a fight, not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake," said Trudeau.
In response to Trudeau's anger, Trump said Canada did not do enough to stop the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals to the United States.
Previously, in January 2025, Prime Minister Trudeau met with the prime ministers of 10 Canadian provinces to discuss how to react to these US import tariffs and the list of target tariffs. Trudeau said that any retaliation from Canada will be harsh but refused to give details.
Trudeau also noted the "real" consequences for Americans due to Trump's decision to impose widespread 25 percent import tariffs on Canada, as well as 10 percent energy tariffs.
"Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities. They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store and gas at the pump," said Trudeau.
