TEMPO.CO, JakartaCanada’s Minister for International Development, Ahmed Hussen, has expressed the country’s readiness to help Indonesia develop nuclear power as an alternative energy source to tackle climate change.

“Canada has extensive experience and expertise in nuclear resources, and we are eager to share this with Indonesia,” Hussen said in a special interview with ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday, February 14.

He emphasized that Canada understands Indonesia’s identification of nuclear power as a key alternative to meet the country’s growing energy demands while managing emissions amidst climate change.

Since Indonesia’s nuclear energy development is still in its early stages, Hussen affirmed that Canada is ready to support the country in establishing a nuclear energy ecosystem, including regulatory frameworks and funding. Cooperation on nuclear technology could follow at a later stage.

“We must recognize that beyond technology, there are other important aspects, such as funding, technical issues, and various other considerations that need to be addressed,” Hussen explained.

In addition to working with Indonesia, Hussen noted that Canada is also exploring the use of nuclear resources in other ASEAN countries, aiming to help meet climate mitigation targets and reduce emissions, all while ensuring energy needs are met.

Indonesia and Canada have previously explored nuclear cooperation. At the Special ASEAN-Canada Summit in October 2024, the two countries discussed a proposal to collaborate on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), which offer an affordable and safe source of nuclear energy.

“During that meeting, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed Canada’s willingness to share its expertise in nuclear energy and technology with ASEAN countries,” Hussen said.

Additionally, in December 2024, Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Research Organization (ORTN BRIN) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to collaborate on nuclear research and development.

According to Syaiful Bakhri, the head of ORTN BRIN, the collaboration will focus on advancing nuclear research and development by enhancing human resource capacity, including researcher and student exchanges, as well as visits.
