TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli attack on Saturday, March 8, 2025, killed two Palestinians in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip. This attack marks the extension of the 42-day ceasefire agreement at risk.
The Israeli military stated that the airstrike was carried out as an Israeli drone fell into the southern Gaza territory. Some individuals attempted to retrieve the drone, which Tel Aviv deemed a failed smuggling attempt.
The attack occurred a day after an Israeli drone struck and killed two Gaza residents on Friday, March 7, 2025. The Israeli military stated that the attack targeted a group of Hamas members suspected of operating near the Israeli army in northern Gaza and planning to detonate an explosive device in the field.
The series of attacks took place as Hamas delegation sought to initiate dialogue for a ceasefire in Cairo under Egypt's mediation. The dialogue was intended to process the second-phase ceasefire, which could lead to the end of the Gaza conflict.
As cited from Reuters, Hamas indicated that there were several indicators concerning the possibility of negotiating the second-phase ceasefire. However, Hamas did not provide further details on this matter.
"We affirm our readiness to engage in discussions for the negotiation of the second-phase ceasefire to meet the demands of Gaza residents. We call for serious efforts to assist the people of Gaza and to lift the blockade because our people have suffered greatly," said Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is divided into three phases. The first phase includes prisoner exchange.
Meanwhile, the second-phase ceasefire aims to halt long-term hostilities, release remaining hostages, and completely withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza. The third-phase ceasefire focuses on the reconstruction of Gaza under the supervision of Egypt, Qatar, and the UN.
