TEMPO.CO, Donggala - Indonesian Conservation Foundation and Jala inaugurated the Climate Smart Shrimp Farming (CSSF) project in Lalombi Village, South Banawa District, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. The concept of shrimp farms that are not only productive but also sustainable is claimed to be the first of its kind in Asia.

"Climate Smart Shrimp Farming combines pond management systems with key ecosystems such as mangroves as an integral part," said Ocean Program Director of Indonesian Conservation, Budiati Prasetiamartati, in Lalombi Village.

According to Budiati, the CSSF approach emphasizes the extent of the pond used, the extent of protected mangrove areas, and how environmental services and connectivity can be formed. The project in Lalombi Village conducts shrimp cultivation on a 6.5-hectare area alongside 3.5 hectares of mangroves.

According to the design, seawater is pumped to fill the shrimp ponds. After one cultivation cycle, the water is discharged back into the sea through wastewater treatment installations and the mangrove area first to enhance the neutralization process.

Budiati hopes that it "can help maintain the sustainable increase and/or stability of shrimp production." It also helps foster the restoration process of the mangroves from the current area of 0.24 hectares.

Parallel research will be conducted to further ensure these impacts. The preliminary projection by Indonesian Conservation suggests that if the planting of 3.5 hectares is successful, the total carbon absorbed by the mangroves could reach 14 times the existing condition.

In his explanation, Jala Chairman Aryo Wiryawan stated that out of the 6.5 hectares of shrimp farming area to be built, only 3.2 hectares are shrimp ponds. The rest is allocated for the construction of labyrinth ponds and wastewater treatment ponds for the inflow and outflow of water.

The pilot CSSF project stands on a 12-hectare land with a total investment of 1.2 million dollars from Jala. According to Aryo, CSSF is different from conventional intensive shrimp farms that only maximize pond area. "What we are doing also allocates some land to obtain environmental support," he said, adding, "If successful, this will be a model for sustainable shrimp farming."

Aryo hopes for support from the community to ensure the project runs safely and smoothly. Today, during the inauguration, tree planting was carried out at the mangrove restoration site. Four out of seven constructed shrimp ponds have been filled with shrimp larvae. "In total, we will release 3.5 million for the first cycle," said Aryo.
