TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several actors from the 'Conclave' movie paid their respects to Pope Francis, who is currently in critical condition due to mild kidney failure after suffering from respiratory issues.
The expressions were made on the stage of the 31st Screen Actors Guild or SAG Awards 2025 at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, United States, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, local time.
Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini received the highest award as the best ensemble film at the SAG Awards 2025. They together received the trophy and took the time to pray for Pope Francis.
“First of all, we would like to wish Pope Francis a quick recovery,” star Isabella Rossellini remarked before the cast introduced a montage of the film, quoted by Variety.
Conclave Actors' Words on Pope Francis' Critical Condition
After delivering their victory speech on stage, the actors headed to the winner's room. There they were asked by the media about Pope Francis' health issues and the potential for a real conclave in the near future.
As depicted in the film, the "conclave" itself is a meeting of the College of Cardinals convened to elect a Pope, the highest leader of the Catholic Church worldwide.
“Pope Francis, I wish him well. In our film, we analyzed the election of a new pope, which is very secretive, taking place within the Vatican in the beautiful room that was painted by Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel that we reproduced," said Rossellini, who hails from Italy, quoted by Variety.
"Sergio and I were more familiar, maybe than all of you, but we don’t know exactly what happens during the Conclave. The film reveals the possible debates,” she added.
Sergio Castellitto, who plays Tedesco in the Conclave movie, then spoke in Italian, which was translated by Rossellini.
For Castellitto, people living in Rome or just a few meters from Pope Francis' residence means they have a much closer relationship.
“We see the helicopter leaving his place: ‘Oh, is the Pope flying off today and coming back!’ So, our relationship as Italians to the Pope is much closer. I repeat, I really wish him well," Castellitto said.
The 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, due to a respiratory tract infection.
Until Sunday, February 23, 2025, he is still in critical condition while receiving treatment for pneumonia and mild kidney failure after suffering from a respiratory crisis, according to the Vatican.
About 'Conclave' Movie
'Conclave' is based on Robert Harris' novel of the same name, set within the Vatican as it explores the Catholic Church's inner workings. The film unfolds over several days, following the sudden death of the Pope and the intense efforts to elect a new one.
Ralph Fiennes stars as Cardinal Lawrence, who leads the centuries-old papal selection process, while Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, vying for the papacy. Isabella Rossellini portrays Sister Agnes, a key figure in the election.
'Conclave' won Best Film at the 2025 BAFTA and earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Best Costume Design, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Original Music, and Best Editing.
